1764
[11/1765] Operated by John Mein, it is located on Corhill near today’s 60 State Street. The first circulating library in Boston, it is operated by the newly-arrived Scottish immigrant, who sells subscriptions for the use of his personal library of more than 1,200 volumes. He advertises that he was persuaded to start the library “by the repeated requests of a number of gentlemen, the friends of literature.”
